EDU 630: Needs Assessment for Learning Environments

Estimated Hours Per Week: 12

Overview

Assessment is a decision making tool that helps us measure where we are compared to where we want to be. In the era of e-learning, performance consulting and emergent technologies, analysis and assessment grows in importance as organizations become more concerned with competitive advantage and employee expertise. The investment in learning and training, however, is also under scrutiny to be certain it not only contributes to strategic outcomes but is a good investment of resources. Learning programs and training should not only meet the needs of organizations, but should effectively anticipate needs as well.

This course introduces approaches and techniques for planning through training needs assessment. Students apply analysis theory and skills to real problems, create instruments, gather data, and consider how to counter objections and influence decision-makers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe what performance analysis and needs assessment are and how the process and results can contribute to individual and organizational goals
  • Determine when and how a needs assessment is needed and when a needs assessment can be by passed
  • Assess barriers to performance analysis and needs assessment, including readiness for involvement in establishing needs
  • Select appropriate data collection strategies and sources, and engage in data collection - including surveys, observations, and interviews
  • Analyze data from multiple and diverse sources to understand a given performance challenge and draw conclusions for solution systems comprised of training and non-training solutions
  • Use data to present results and recommend solutions
  • Differentiate between the various types of analysis (feasibility, goal, task, target population, and conceptual analysis) and be able to select those analyses appropriate for a specific performance gap or training need
  • Provide analysis services to clients and affiliated organizations and agencies in a way that compels their attention and commitment
  • Use a conceptual model to plan, structure and develop an actual needs assessment/training plan in your workplace setting, volunteer organization opportunity, or other situation (with instructor approval), when a performance gap has been perceived.
